The shaft is a vital part of your vessel as it connects your boat's engine to the propeller. As the shaft is underwater, it's prone to galvanic corrosion, which is why you'll need a shaft anode to keep it protected. If you sail in fresh water, you'll need a Magnesium shaft anode, as there is lower open circuit potential in fresh water. In addition, unlike zinc shaft anodes and aluminium shaft anodes, magnesium anodes react rapidly when exposed to seawater, which is why they should only be used in fresh water.
