Galvanic Isolator

Galvanic isolators for boats are specifically designed to prevent galvanic corrosion, which is a common issue in marine environments. Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are connected electrically in the presence of an electrolyte, such as seawater. This can lead to accelerated corrosion of the less noble (more reactive) metal.

Galvanic isolators are installed in the electrical systems of boats to prevent galvanic corrosion. They do this by interrupting the electrical connection between the boat's DC electrical system and the shore power system when the boat is connected to shore power. In addition, galvanic isolators separate the grounding systems of the boat and the shore power source. This prevents the flow of direct current (DC) between the two systems, which is a common cause of galvanic corrosion.

Galvanic isolators typically consist of one or more diodes arranged in a way that allows alternating current (AC) to pass through while blocking DC currents. They are often housed in a waterproof enclosure suitable for marine environments. Furthermore, galvanic isolators are typically installed between the shore power inlet and the boat's electrical system. Proper installation and periodic maintenance are essential to ensure their effectiveness in preventing galvanic corrosion.

While galvanic isolators provide effective protection against galvanic corrosion, they are often used in conjunction with other corrosion prevention measures, such as sacrificial anodes and galvanic corrosion monitoring systems.
